This was doing the rounds last night and I ignored it initially but it keeps cropping up so there might be something in it:
James; Johnson, Upson, Terry, A Cole; Milner, Lampard, Barry, Gerrard; Rooney, Defoe.
Not entirely sure what to make of it to be honest. I can only wonder what has happened to poor Joe Cole though, the entire country wants him to start today and after spending most of last season trying to impress one Italian manager and failing, it looks like the same is happening with England.
Milner should provide a more reliable final ball than Lennon or SWP, but with Heskey replaced by the 4’6″ Defoe, and Gerrard and Lampard poor headers of the ball, he’s only going to have Rooney to aim at. Overall though this looks like a team designed to keep the ball on the floor – no Heskey means no temptation for bored full-backs to lump the ball at the big wardrobe up front – but my own Xbox 360 FIFA 10 experiments have shown that Rooney and Defoe don’t work up front, never have and never will.
I’m happy to be proven wrong, but I’ll be even happier if this team sheet is just a load of bollocks and we’re actually playing 4-5-1 with Joe Cole wide left and Gerrard behind Rooney. Fingers crossed – just a couple of hours to go.
